Get A Race Licence

So the bug has bitten hard, and you’re now looking to get more involved?  Dependent on what events you’d like to enter a race licence may be necessary in order to compete.

No Licence
There are plenty of events you can enter that don’t require any specific race licence (but you do need to be a paid up Manawatu Car Club member).
Some such events are:

  • Single Car Sprints (Track Race Days, heats where you are sent out on track 20 seconds apart from any other car)
  • Autocross
  • Motorkhanas
  • Time Trials
  • Treasure Hunts

 

Club Sport (M Grade) Licence
Required if you intend to compete in next level Car Club run events such as:

  • Dual Car Sprints (Track Race Days, heats where you are sent out at the same time as another car)
  • Sealed tarmac hill climbs

Steps to take in order to obtain your licence are as follows:

  1. Familiarise yourself with the M Grade license testing information here
  2. Download for reference the Drivers Guide which will be required here
  3. Create a login to Motorsport NZ and pay the licence fee here
  4. Study for the test which consists of open book questions from the drivers guide
  5. Contact an examiner listed in section three of the certified examiners list here
  6. Sit and pass the test and Motorsport NZ will issue you with your new licence
  7. Remember that this licence needs to be renewed every year through Motorsport NZ
  8. If you’re planning to enter C Grade type events below, you can skip this licence and sit C Grade instead.

 

National Race (C Grade) Licence
Required if you intend to compete in local, regional or national circuit race events on established tarmac tracks.  Locally this licence is required if you would like to enter and compete in any of the following classes run by the Car Club presently:

  • Summer Series (all classes)
  • Winter Series (all classes)

Steps to take in order to obtain your licence are as follows:

  1. Familiarise yourself with the C Grade licence testing information here
  2. Download for reference sections of the Motorsport Manual which will be required here
  3. Create a login to Motorsport NZ and pay the licence fee here
  4. Study for the exam which consists of open book questions plus some oral questions without reference material
  5. Contact an examiner listed in section three of the certified examiners list here
  6. Sit and pass the exam and Motorsport NZ will issue you with your new licence
  7. Remember that this licence needs to be renewed every year through Motorsport NZ

 

National Rally (R Grade) Licence
Required if you intend to compete in local, regional or national rally events on closed public roads in an appropriately homologated rally or rallycross car.  Locally this licence is required if you would like to enter and compete in any of the following classes run by the Car Club presently:

  • Regional/national level rally events
  • Gravel hill climbs

Steps to take in order to obtain your licence are as follows:

  1. Familiarise yourself with the R Grade licence testing information here
  2. Download for reference sections of the Motorsport Manual which will be required here
  3. Create a login to Motorsport NZ and pay the licence fee here
  4. Study for the exam which consists of open book questions plus some oral questions without reference material
  5. Contact an examiner listed in section three of the certified examiners list here
  6. Sit and pass the exam and Motorsport NZ will issue you with your new licence
  7. Remember that this licence needs to be renewed every year through Motorsport NZ
